Whether in the real world or in World of Warcraft, speed and precision of action are the secrets to winning in hand to hand (or Player versus Player) combat. Every fraction of a second counts, and if you make a mistake, it could be all over. The single-player demo of Volition’s promising third-person shooter title Red Faction: Guerrilla is getting its public release today. Previously, the downloadable demo was only available to players that had pre-ordered the game (via a download token.) The floodgates are opening now however, and the demo is already available via the Xbox Live Marketplace for 360 gamers.
PlayStation 3 owners are expected to be able to grab the demo from the PlayStation Network Store a little later on today, but those poor old PC Red Faction fans are crap outta luck; there’s no word on when or if the demo will release for the PC crowd.
A bit about the game:
As protagonist Alec Mason, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to stick it to them, whether you’re on a mission or on an impromptu demolition derby. Guerrilla sees the EDF morphed from the series’ good guys into the oppressive rulers who have turned Mars into a police state.
After joining your brother and the rest of the Red Faction, your job becomes to take out the EDF and build “colonist” morale at the same time. While killing EDF soldiers helps the Red Faction’s cause, smashing the EDF’s concrete and steel infrastructure works just as well, and is more immediately satisfying.
The retail version of Red Faction: Guerrilla is due to hit both consoles and PC on June 9th in the States and June 30th in Europe.

If you ever doubted the ridiculous popularity of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy franchise, then now’s the time to sit up and pay attention. Kotaku reads that as part of a large corporate strategy meeting (presumably something to do with the recent Eidos deal) lifetime sales figures for the company’s top three franchises were revealed.
Final Fantasy games to date have sold over 85 million copies worldwide, while the Dragon Quest series has shifted over 47 million copies. Not bad for a set of games that have had reasonably small exposure outside of Japan. Third up is the Kingdom Hearts franchise, which has done an impressive 12 million unit sales to date.
With Final Fantasy XIII on the horizon, it’s safe to assume that those lifetime figures will get another healthy shot in the arm sooner rather than later. The Final Fantasy series spans over 20 years at this point shows no signs of slowing down in the future. Series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi left Square Enix to form Mistwalker Studios.

The concept of time manipulation in videogaming is not a new one. From slo-mo bullet-time effects to freezing time to even reversing time, this sci-fi element is looking a bit played out these days. Enter Raven Software’s new shooter Singularity. Creative director Jon Zuk recently spoke with vg247 to deliver the scoop on how his new FPS does things differently.
The game forgoes the more traditional methods of time manipulation and instead, allows the player to control the actual age of objects in-game.
Using the Time Manipulation Device or TMD, the player can control the age of objects but not time itself. Many objects can be manipulated and these changes in age are permanent in most cases. When an object is changed in time, it can shift between the current day state and a state as it existed some 60 years in the past, when an accident occurred on the island.
Aging and renewing things like chains or even concrete supports can let loose heavy or explosive objects to fall on unsuspecting enemies. The TMD also has a Time Stasis feature that allows you to grab items and sustain them in time.
An example of the stasis allows you to grab an enemy grenade and throw it back at them without fear of it blowing; the stasis field apparently removes the grenade’s timer effect. Interesting stuff.
