PS3/360 Owners. Which is better in your opinion.. XMB or Dashboard

Monday, November 10th, 2008

I own both the PS3 and 360 and i have to say that while i do think the 360 is overall the better console due to its current game library (which will change in the PS3`s favor sooner than later) I do think however the XMB is just overall more user friendly and more free than the dashboard.. I love being able to browse the web while listening to music.. Heck, I could spend hours downloading user created themes on PSU.com from the webbrowser and just browsing the PS Store.. And also xbox live marketplace feels a little cluttered compared to the new refined PS store.. With the PS store you actually feel like its a game store whereas with marketplace its just a list of stuff. Overall i find the XMB to be more user friendly and just easier and more fun to navigate.. anyone else agree?!

RUMOR: Xbox 360 Getting a 3D Dashboard Make-Over?

Monday, November 10th, 2008

The rumored Xbox 360 Spring Update might not have hit yet, but we know something big is in the works for the console`s dashboard.

How big? Well besides the gi-normous list of rumored updates we posted about back in May we`re now hearing from a number of sources that the Live dashboard is going to be getting a second interface option, one that will use the yet-to-be announced motion controller to navigate.

This new user interface, we`ve been told, will recreate the increasingly cluttered dashboard “blade” system in a 3D environment that will be something more akin to the Minority Report than a filing cabinet. The motion controls will allow users to sort of slide through the different levels of this floating menu system.

Sounds like a fantastic idea, if it can be implemented correctly.

Microsoft not commenting on rumored dashboard update

Monday, November 10th, 2008

“Microsoft does not comment on rumors and speculation” is the standard response when it comes to asking the monolithic publisher about anything that has yet to happen. This very same line was given once again to GamePro on Friday when Microsoft was asked about the upcoming spring update. While the response isn`t particularly interesting, the reason why GamePro would even ask about the update is.

A mysterious source tipped off Kotaku about a feature of the update. A feature so crazy, it seems beyond this dimension. Apparently, the rumored update is allegedly going to feature motion-controlled menus and buttons. Somehow, using a motion controller to navigate through the dashboard is supposed to alleviate the issue of drudging through unwanted pages on the Live network.

This is definitely one of those things that you should take with a grain of salt. While I would personally enjoy using a motion controller to switch through blades and download arcade titles, I think it may be safe to assume that this will not happen. Or, it will not happen in quite this capacity. I imagine that, if anything, the update would incorporate the usage of motion controls much like the Wii handles menu navigation with the retro controller. It is just a different device handling the same procedure.

But, we`ll see if a controller is announced at E3 first, before we start yelling for a Robocop spike downloader or a Matrix plug in the back of our heads to assist with our dashboard functions.

WTF Yall are all talkin about the new dashboard and gears forget all that

New Dashboard features detailed….More to be revealed! EDIT: now includes video

Monday, November 10th, 2008

From Major Nelson-

Xbox LIVE GM Marc Whitten (Notwen) has sent me the following letter to share with the Xbox LIVE Community. I goes into a little more detail about some of the new features that are coming as part of the new Xbox Experience this Fall. I`ll work on getting Marc on a future show to discuss further.

Dear Xbox LIVE Member,

When we launched Xbox 360 in November 2005, Xbox LIVE was integrated directly into the console. Back then, Xbox 360 was the first system to deliver access to experiences beyond just the disc in the tray. With the Xbox guide and dashboard you had access to everything on your console as well as your community.

We also imagined that Xbox experience would continuously improve over time, through the power of software.

Since launch, you`ve always pushed us to continuously innovate. It is because you spoke with one loud voice that we added new features like background downloading, 1080p support, movies and TV shows, video chat, a Marketplace blade and instant messaging.

Over time, as we`ve delivered more and more content into the Xbox LIVE Marketplace, we`ve heard from many of you that it has become increasingly difficult to find the games and content you want.

And that brings us to today.

Because of your feedback, we started rethinking the entire Xbox experience. What we discovered was that we could not only provide a better experience for you, but also something that reaches out to new audiences.

What John Schappert unveiled for the world on stage at E3 was just a sneak preview, so I wanted to share some deeper details on some of the new features in the new Xbox experience.

Here is a look at some additional features you will find interesting:

· Play from hard drive. Copy your games from the game disc and play directly from the hard drive. Not only will the drive not spin, but load times are quicker, as well. Of course, you will still need the disc in the tray to prove you own the game.

· Access Xbox LIVE Marketplace on the Web. Browse and purchase Marketplace content whenever you want from Xbox.com and it downloads automatically to your console. Purchase that new map, television episode, the latest Xbox LIVE Arcade game or set up a movie to watch when you get home from work.

· Dashboard built into the new Xbox Guide. For everyone who loves the blades interface, it`s not going away; they are now built directly in to the new Xbox guide. Every feature and option is available right from the guide. You can even access your full games library at all times. No matter where you are (in dash or in game), immediately call up your games played list and directly launch a game.

· LIVE Party system. Create a party of up to eight friends, and stay with them from one game to another, or watch a Netflix movie together, or share a slideshow of your personal photos. It works with all Xbox 360 titles, not just upcoming games. LIVE Party allows up to eight people to chat in the dashboard, so you can meet up before playing.

· Xbox LIVE Primetime. This whole new category of games is going to give you more reasons to get online with your friends. Games will support everything you`d expect, like Achievements and leader boards, but many of these games will include real prizes. You can invite your friends, and even set a reminder for an upcoming show. Each game is broadcast simultaneously, so everyone is answering the same questions. Many events will have a live host, calling the shots as they happen.

· Avatars. Your online identity started as a Gamertag - it then grew into a personalized Gamercard. Now, it has evolved even further into avatars. You can express your **** check out new outfits and share this with the community. Avatars will also be integrated into Xbox LIVE Arcade games, LIVE Party, as well as retail games.

· New display support. Because you asked for it, we are adding 16X10 over VGA or HDMI, and support for 1440×900 or 1680×1050.

This is only the beginning. Over the next few months, we will share more details on the upcoming changes.

See you online,

Marc Whitten

Can we keep the old dashboard?

Monday, November 10th, 2008

cause the new one looks terrible, looks way too kiddy and casual. Current 360 dashboard is way better. If you cant keep the old dashboard I wont download the update. Seriously what was MS thinking when they designed this new dashboard

The New Dashboard

Monday, November 10th, 2008

The new Xbox Dashboard, to me, seems to be moving away from the basic utilitarian function of the Current dash, into a more graphicaly appeasing and UI friendly version. Isn`t this pretty much Xbox Vista?

I personally have a mixed reaction to the new interface, because even though it adds new features, The interface seems more about being pretty than fast, for example, the new XBL page, which is almost over the top with pictures of your friends. Why Can`t i just Go to a list and pick them out? Isn`t that easier? But the Party feature seems pretty cool. and so do the interactive gameshows. But I guess It would be pretty hard to shoehorn all of that into the current interface. I had been pretty sure that XBL ran out of new Ideas, but this blew me away.

About the new 360 dashboard

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Ok normally i never participate in system wars (since i own a 360 and PS3) but since i thought the new dashboard thing looked a little lame i made this picture in which Microsoft supplied their own little koke already.

Photobucket

You have to admit, it doesn`t really look all that interesting, i`d prefer some slick design to crappy cartoon people.
