Why use review scores from others to justify the quality of YOUR experience?

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Yes I have recently ventured back into the illogical, ridiculous, never ending, hilarious, and pointless abyss known as System Wars. If you know nothing of how things work here in System Wars let me tell you about one aspect which only reinforces the stupidity of the place (yeah it`s a stupid area to go into, but it is a fun place regardless). In System Wars review scores are used to justify a game or system`s greatness. Of course using a review score to some how prove that your experience was right and other`s experiences with the game were wrong is a lame thing to do, but people do it anyways. Review scores are used here only when they benefit the person, when they don`t give them an advantage in an argument they will not use them, for example here at GS the PC has the most AA and AAA exclusive games out of any system (last time I checked). When you tell that to someone they will simply say I use this other website for review scores so it doesn`t matter. When a game that the same person who “doesn`t care” about GS scores receives a high score from GS they will claim “ownage”. So this whole thing is hypocritical to say the least. Anyways that is enough of a lesson on the way System Wars works for now, it is time to get to the meat of this whole thing.

System Wars is the darkest of dark abysses in which only the bravest and the crazies will post.

You know I love it when people try to use review scores from mainstream websites as proof that a game is great and if you didn t enjoy the game then your experience is wrong or you are just a silly old “fanboy”. For example Halo got a 9.7 here at GS, it has to be good… right? Well I m sure you could argue that the game is technically great and all of that wonderful stuff, but really it all boils down to what you think of the game and not some total stranger s view of a game. The game can be technically amazing in all kinds of aspects, but if it isn t fun than you probably aren t going to play it or at least you probably won t enjoy playing the game.

So let me say this, Halo is an average game. “OMGZ U CAN T SAY THAT IT GOT A 97 out of 100 at METACRITIC!” Yeah well that is nice, but it got a 6.7 from me. Gee, I wonder what I am going to care about more.

Oh noes! The Halo fanboys have transformed!

Now I`m going to have 50 billion crazy rabies infected Halo fanboys chomping at my neck, saying “you are wrong man… Halo is a great game look at these scores man, obviously your experience with the game is incorrect”. What I find to be entertaining might be different than what others find to be entertaining. I have said this type of thing on many occasions, but I will say it again. Games are about entertainment, if the game isn`t entertaining I`m not going to go with the flow and call it entertaining just because it got high scores from some websites and some magazines. Sorry I`m the type of person to assuage you guys. I`m here to state my opinion even if it hurts your hypersensitive bodies and feelings in ways that are currently inconceivable to man. I probably just caused the Earth`s water levels to rise to dangerous cataclysmic levels because of how much tears I`ve brought to the eyes of the fans of Halo. So let me set the record straight and give you all a nice big tissue, I like Halo as a Coopertive game, it is one of, if not the best out of the console FPS bunch so I don`t really consider Halo to be an average game (I gave it a 9.5), but others do and I can understand that. However there are some people out there that just flat out say “Halo Sucks” and don`t give any reasoning for it, that is lame if you ask me.

I m sorry for bringing up Halo, I should have known that their tears could wipe us off the planet. Hopefully it isn t too late.

Don`t give me these review scores as evidence that I`m wrong because Joe, Jan, Jane, John, Jerry Reviewers loved X game. I don`t give a ****. I`m not supporting blind hatred for games, but I do respect people who stand by their own opinions and don`t soften up to please others. So instead of flaunting fancy numbers in my face how about you give me some reasons why a game is good or bad.

best multiplayer experience?

Some of the Features for the NEW Xbox Experience!!!

Some of the features in the new Xbox experience (8 person chat, VGA support and more)

Xbox LIVE GM Marc Whitten (Notwen) has sent me the following letter to share with the Xbox LIVE Community. I goes into a little more detail about some of the new features that are coming as part of the new Xbox Experience this Fall. I`ll work on getting Marc on a future show to discuss further.

Dear Xbox LIVE Member,

When we launched Xbox 360 in November 2005, Xbox LIVE was integrated directly into the console. Back then, Xbox 360 was the first system to deliver access to experiences beyond just the disc in the tray. With the Xbox guide and dashboard you had access to everything on your console as well as your community.

We also imagined that Xbox experience would continuously improve over time, through the power of software.

Since launch, you`ve always pushed us to continuously innovate. It is because you spoke with one loud voice that we added new features like background downloading, 1080p support, movies and TV shows, video chat, a Marketplace blade and instant messaging.

Over time, as we`ve delivered more and more content into the Xbox LIVE Marketplace, we`ve heard from many of you that it has become increasingly difficult to find the games and content you want.

And that brings us to today.

Because of your feedback, we started rethinking the entire Xbox experience. What we discovered was that we could not only provide a better experience for you, but also something that reaches out to new audiences.

What John Schappert unveiled for the world on stage at E3 was just a sneak preview, so I wanted to share some deeper details on some of the new features in the new Xbox experience.

Here is a look at some additional features you will find interesting:

· Play from hard drive. Copy your games from the game disc and play directly from the hard drive. Not only will the drive not spin, but load times are quicker, as well. Of course, you will still need the disc in the tray to prove you own the game.

· Access Xbox LIVE Marketplace on the Web. Browse and purchase Marketplace content whenever you want from Xbox.com and it downloads automatically to your console. Purchase that new map, television episode, the latest Xbox LIVE Arcade game or set up a movie to watch when you get home from work.

· Dashboard built into the new Xbox Guide. For everyone who loves the blades interface, it`s not going away; they are now built directly in to the new Xbox guide. Every feature and option is available right from the guide. You can even access your full games library at all times. No matter where you are (in dash or in game), immediately call up your games played list and directly launch a game.

· LIVE Party system. Create a party of up to eight friends, and stay with them from one game to another, or watch a Netflix movie together, or share a slideshow of your personal photos. It works with all Xbox 360 titles, not just upcoming games. LIVE Party allows up to eight people to chat in the dashboard, so you can meet up before playing.

· Xbox LIVE Primetime. This whole new category of games is going to give you more reasons to get online with your friends. Games will support everything you`d expect, like Achievements and leader boards, but many of these games will include real prizes. You can invite your friends, and even set a reminder for an upcoming show. Each game is broadcast simultaneously, so everyone is answering the same questions. Many events will have a live host, calling the shots as they happen.

· Avatars. Your online identity started as a Gamertag - it then grew into a personalized Gamercard. Now, it has evolved even further into avatars. You can express your **** check out new outfits and share this with the community. Avatars will also be integrated into Xbox LIVE Arcade games, LIVE Party, as well as retail games.

· New display support. Because you asked for it, we are adding 16X10 over VGA or HDMI, and support for 1440×900 or 1680×1050.

This is only the beginning. Over the next few months, we will share more details on the upcoming changes.

See you online,

Marc Whitten

Major Nelson continues to clear up New Xbox Experience

Avatar`s Optional !!!!

Game to HDD Optional as well !!!!

This all great news IMHO

MS sees Optional FTW.

PS: I can`t listen to the Pod-cast but if someone here does and hears something news worthy, please do tell.

Considering how much time we spend looking at Xbox Live waiting for someone, anyone to accept our Cloning Clydegame invite, it`s understandable that we`d be pretty trepidatious about some of the planned big changescoming to the service. Thankfully, Xbox`s Major Nelson is there to hold our heads to his audio bosom, stroke our hair and promise us that everything`s going to be OK.

His new podcast features all kinds of reassurances, chief among them: We won`t haveto create an avatar and transferring Xbox 360 to the hard drive will never be required, something we were paranoid about. What other comforts will you discover inside? Only after a click here will you know for sure.

PC multiplats can actually be the worst experience.

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Not any real technical chance, but more of a social chance that your experience may be the worst experience for a game. Since it`s been a recent trend that PC games arrive much later than their console counterparts (with some exceptions) during that time between console gamers having the game and then you having the game, you may be all spoliered up from everyone talking about it. Unless you hole up in your basement with no internet access and just stay there for about the 6 months it takes for your PC version to arrive, you may be bombarded with “Aries dies” or “Snape kills Dumbledore.”

Metal Gear Online is probably the best online experience this gen

Monday, November 10th, 2008

I`m a huge Halo fan, but Halo 3 was so disappointing. I find myself playing COD4 and Rainbow Six Vegas more. Then I hear MGO is returning and thought, “Why are they bringing this crap back?” I came in with a presupposition of this game sucking, and for the first two weeks I thought it did. However, something kept sucking me in to keep playing. In fact, over the past couple of weeks I have been playing nothing but MGO, not MGS4. Now you`re thinking to yourself, no way this guy thinks MGO is the best online game!? The game is laggy, hitbox is random, and the hitpoints makes you like terminator. On the contrary, there are so many options this game offers, that no other game can. I came up with a list of 5 reasons why MGO is the best online game this gen.

1. Unique Weaponry: Tranq Gun, Mosin, SOP Destab, CQC and stun knife are some of the few weapons that only MGS could pull off. Nothing is more satisfying than getting a CQC > Lvl 3 Knife kill to a pesty sniper who`s killing all your teammates.

2. Skill leveling: At first, I thought this was a stupid idea, but I`m doing a 180 on this. Very rewarding skills has put players in better situations giving them a slight advantage over there enemies.

3. SOP: What all other shooters are missing. This system is saving grace if you have a team that knows how to use it. “ID tagged soldiers using ID tagged guns…” You know the rest….

4. Team Sneaking and Sneak Missions: One word to describe these missions…Amazing. Team Sneak is innovative, addictive, and fun experience that no other game gives you. Again, it`s one of those things that only MGS can pull off. Also, playing as Solid Snake with Mk. II by your side online is just icing on the cake.

5. Survival Mission: What will they think of next? This is the main reason I think MGO is the best online experience this gen. On the weekends, Konami have specific rooms set-up for a team base survival campaign. 6 man team goes against another 6 man team competing in random missions and maps for reward points. The more you win, the more reward points you`ll receive. If you lose, it`s game over. What`s so cool is if you are on a 2+ winning streak, News Flash tells the whole room (800 people) how good your team is doing. This of course puts a target on your teams back to take you down. Reward points are use to customize your character`s armor.Hope I can trick out my character to look like Raiden.

Metal Gear Online is hands down the best game online. It does everything your favorite shooter does and more. In fact, I will say that MGO has revolutionize online multiplayer shooters. Other companies should take note.

My unbiased experience with PSN and XBL (speaking in terms of the community)

Allright. Here we go. This is all true with no BS

I have a ps3 with a bluetooth headset. I was playing some resistance before going to my friends house. I was not playing with any friends, just random people. 5 out of the team of 16 had headsets. We were all basically directing where people should go, informing each other of the position of snipers, and small talk about sports and movies etc. It was an overall good experience. Although the next match…I was the only person with a headset on my team and therefore I turned my bluetooth off

I went over my friends house that night and he has an xbox 360. I got to his house late and we played nba live 08 for the night. First we played each other and then we both teamed up against somebody online. My friend and our opponent didnt use their headsets. We ended up winning and my friend eventually fell asleep (this kid is as lazy as lard). I was not tired at all and I decided to try the team play feature and I used my buddy`s headset. It was great, all 5 people on my team had headsets and we were talkin strategy and setting up plays, along with the small talk as well. Even though in the 3rd quarter, a lot of people quit which left some players and mostly CPU. I quit and fell asleep.

Next morning, I woke up and my friend was asleep and I popped in gears of war (i go over my buddy`s a lot so im not all that bad at gears). I joined a game (with friendly fire turned on) and right when the round started, somebody on my team kills me. After that round, in the lobby, I said “hey man, whats up with that?” and he simply goes on singing fergalicious . The next round started and he attacked me once more but this time I killed him and finished the round. One of the members on my team (his gamer tag was fade) turned his headset off and a member on our team said “fade fade fade fade fade fade fade” for maybe 2 minutes until he finally came back. Very annoying. The next round, the same person as last round tried killing me with friendly fire and i killed him again and then i got booted from the game. Then i received a voice message from the same guy saying “thats what happens when you attack your own teammate!”.

The end

LBP = THE next generation experience

Quoted from an article. Link at the bottom:

Character Customization

  • There are a huge amount of customizable items, from hats to glasses to shoes to pants to zebra outfits and everything in between.
  • There is a Tron suit you can wear in the game, along with a killzone helmet and mask.
  • Not only that, but there are about 25 different materials and designs that you can choose to have your sackboy made out of, including 3 types of camo.
  • There are held items that you can choose from, such as a wooden sword and a magic wand(a stick with a star on the top). You can`t use them as weapons, but when you slap while holding an item you hit them with said item.
  • You can slap just about any kind of sticker you can think of on your sackboy, so you can essentially make your own designs.

Level editor

  • For those of you that don`t know, you can switch back and forth between flying and running around by pressing *down* on the d-pad.
  • When everyone has a menu open, the menus auto-adjust to the top left, top right, bottom left, and bottom right corners to keep the screen clear.
  • LBP comes with a nice 10 premade vehicles or so(I drove a lowrider!), but as with everything else you can edit them as you like.
  • Logs burn. You can make a log, or anything out of wood, really, and set it on fire. We made a floor full of burning logs and then we drove a monster truck over them.
  • There are “triggers” that you can place to have events happen right when you want them to. For example, you can make it so halfway through swinging on a rope across a gap, the rope snaps and you fall down to another area.
  • Anything you can think of, you can make. Just be careful when making a “Sonic” level or a “Mario” level, because that won`t fly on the servers. Name it something generic that won`t warrant deletion.
  • If you want to make carpet, you can. All you have to do is take a picture of some carpet, apply the sticker to something thin and soft(sponge, for example), and save the item.
  • If you made a kickass vehicle, you can make that vehicle collectible through your level. For example, you could reward players who made it past a particularly difficult portion of your level with a buggy you made, which they could use at any time throughout making their levels. This applies to items, such as carpet, as well.
  • The size of your crater on the moon corresponds directly with the amount of items you can place on a level. This way you can have a minigame taking up a small crater, while a full, hour long level would take up one of the largest craters.

The Construction Yard

  • This is the level I got a chance to play three times.
  • Eric was really stressing the term “Coopetition”, which is cooperating so you can compete for the collectible items and points. For example, there was a lever that would slide a girder across a gap. It requires two people(at least) to complete. One would move the girder across using a lever, the other would grab the chunk of sponge at the other side, which the first player would now bring back with the same lever. That sponge was required to reach a certain height, so you could collect more goodies. In my case, I stood on the sponge with a friend while another guy dragged it across, and right before we got there I slapped my friend off so I could have the stuff to myself. That, essentially, is coopetition.
  • The developers love to hide goodies that you have to find later. I didn`t notice all the stuff I could eventually collect until the third playthrough. If you`ve ever played Portal, and you know that usually there is more than one way to beat a level, the same applies here. The more difficult task you accomplish, the more collectibles they reward you with.
  • At any point, you can bring up a sticker which is basically a live image recorded from your PS Eye. When you stick the image on a surface, it takes a picture at that moment, so you can tack yourself onto the walls in a level(or whatever else you feel like doing).

Emoting

  • Emoting is awesome. Using the d-pad, you can select three different degrees of sadness, anger, happiness, and fear. For example, you press up to smile, press it again to smile big, and press it again to be ecstatic with your tongue hanging out.
  • If you hold R2, the right stick becomes a controller for your right hand. The same goes for L2, the left stick, and the left hand.
  • The sixaxis controls which direction your head is facing, and it was surprisingly intuitive.
  • If you click and hold L3, the sixaxis controls your hips instead of your head.
  • Using a combination of these, I made my guy do a pretty kickass hula dance. I forced him to do it, though, so he was pretty scared at the time.

To Sum it Up

LittleBigPlanet is so in depth, so customizable, so personal that there`s no way to sum it up in words. You could say it is our generation`s Mario; 20, 30 years from now you`ll be telling your children that you got the chance to grow up with this game, and that`s an experience you don`t want to miss. All I can say is, if you are still on the fence about buying this game, don`t hesitate.
