Why use review scores from others to justify the quality of YOUR experience?

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Yes I have recently ventured back into the illogical, ridiculous, never ending, hilarious, and pointless abyss known as System Wars. If you know nothing of how things work here in System Wars let me tell you about one aspect which only reinforces the stupidity of the place (yeah it`s a stupid area to go into, but it is a fun place regardless). In System Wars review scores are used to justify a game or system`s greatness. Of course using a review score to some how prove that your experience was right and other`s experiences with the game were wrong is a lame thing to do, but people do it anyways. Review scores are used here only when they benefit the person, when they don`t give them an advantage in an argument they will not use them, for example here at GS the PC has the most AA and AAA exclusive games out of any system (last time I checked). When you tell that to someone they will simply say I use this other website for review scores so it doesn`t matter. When a game that the same person who “doesn`t care” about GS scores receives a high score from GS they will claim “ownage”. So this whole thing is hypocritical to say the least. Anyways that is enough of a lesson on the way System Wars works for now, it is time to get to the meat of this whole thing.

System Wars is the darkest of dark abysses in which only the bravest and the crazies will post.

You know I love it when people try to use review scores from mainstream websites as proof that a game is great and if you didn t enjoy the game then your experience is wrong or you are just a silly old “fanboy”. For example Halo got a 9.7 here at GS, it has to be good… right? Well I m sure you could argue that the game is technically great and all of that wonderful stuff, but really it all boils down to what you think of the game and not some total stranger s view of a game. The game can be technically amazing in all kinds of aspects, but if it isn t fun than you probably aren t going to play it or at least you probably won t enjoy playing the game.

So let me say this, Halo is an average game. “OMGZ U CAN T SAY THAT IT GOT A 97 out of 100 at METACRITIC!” Yeah well that is nice, but it got a 6.7 from me. Gee, I wonder what I am going to care about more.

Oh noes! The Halo fanboys have transformed!

Now I`m going to have 50 billion crazy rabies infected Halo fanboys chomping at my neck, saying “you are wrong man… Halo is a great game look at these scores man, obviously your experience with the game is incorrect”. What I find to be entertaining might be different than what others find to be entertaining. I have said this type of thing on many occasions, but I will say it again. Games are about entertainment, if the game isn`t entertaining I`m not going to go with the flow and call it entertaining just because it got high scores from some websites and some magazines. Sorry I`m the type of person to assuage you guys. I`m here to state my opinion even if it hurts your hypersensitive bodies and feelings in ways that are currently inconceivable to man. I probably just caused the Earth`s water levels to rise to dangerous cataclysmic levels because of how much tears I`ve brought to the eyes of the fans of Halo. So let me set the record straight and give you all a nice big tissue, I like Halo as a Coopertive game, it is one of, if not the best out of the console FPS bunch so I don`t really consider Halo to be an average game (I gave it a 9.5), but others do and I can understand that. However there are some people out there that just flat out say “Halo Sucks” and don`t give any reasoning for it, that is lame if you ask me.

I m sorry for bringing up Halo, I should have known that their tears could wipe us off the planet. Hopefully it isn t too late.

Don`t give me these review scores as evidence that I`m wrong because Joe, Jan, Jane, John, Jerry Reviewers loved X game. I don`t give a ****. I`m not supporting blind hatred for games, but I do respect people who stand by their own opinions and don`t soften up to please others. So instead of flaunting fancy numbers in my face how about you give me some reasons why a game is good or bad.

GTA IV Not deserving of its score?

Monday, November 10th, 2008

GTAIV got a 10.

But did it really deserve it?

The game at first was a blast. Felt like the best game ever. But after the first 10 or so hours…it became very repetative and dull.

The missions were exactly the same, with a minor variance here and there, steal a car, drive, kill someone or chase someone down and kill him, rinse, repeat.

Many features were taken out, that were in previous GTA`s…now I can understand the reasoning for this (because they wanted moer realism), but games should never sacrifice gameplay for realism, never.

Now I applaud R* for the amount of detail put in the game, great soundtrack, great commentary, etc. but the game has many flaws. The hand to hand combat, while improved from previous games, is still garbage, the shooting is ok, the cover system could have been implemented better. The online is pathethic.

This game is not a 10, at first I thought it was the best game this gen, but after 10 or so hours, I was dissapointed…this is the first GTA that makes me not want to get 100% out of pure boredom of the game.

What are your thoughts?

Crytek`s clarification of their Multiplat future in PC Gamer

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Ok, in the PC Gamer magazine and on the PC Gamer Podcast(The interview in the magazine was mentioned and sort of vaguely outlined) it was discussed about how they would handle multiplat games in the future. Any multiplat games in the future will be developed PC lead platform and will also have 2 different teams working on creating different experiences. The PC version will be a different game than the consoles version, taking advantage of the PC`s strengths and advantages. Crytek is still a company that is and will continue to be PC centric and PC oriented.

the state of fighting games

Monday, November 10th, 2008

How many years have we been spoon fed with the same games year after… example
DOA,Soul caliber,Tekken,Street fighter, etc. Have we reached a point in which fighters will no longer try to be innovative and rather release a shinier version with one or 2 brand new characters to please the crowd.. Do u crave for a new franchise that tries to raise the bar or innovate the fighting genre or are u content with what it has become?

let`s face it, 99% of games don`t need switch disc

Monday, November 10th, 2008

don`t get me wrong, I just telling the truth.

xb360 have released hundreds of games. only two of them need switch disc( BD, LO)

while most ps3 games need to install , for lower blueray reading speed.

if you install , about 2-3 seconds faster loading time than x360 version, otherwise, significant longer loading time than x360 version.

also the facts no one can denay, blueray mean 1080P movie, but not 1080P gaming, forlack memeory space on console.

The Cows are probably the stupidest breed of fanboys… ever.

Here we go, a looong rant. Brace yourselves! *grabs flame shield + 360*

Claiming Uncharted, Killzone 2 cannot be run on a 360 because of Blu-Ray

Uncharted: had lots of pop-ins, in few occasions there were muddy textures… what could possibly be so great in the game that could not be done on a regular DVD? The high def behind-the-scenes videos? `Cause here I am thinking games are meant to be played.
Killzone 2: 2GB levels, claiming you could only play 3 levels on the 360. Well, cows, why don`t you take a look at Mass Effect, Bioshock. To me, it looks like they have a heck of a lot more detail than the Killzone 2 vids I`ve seen.
Oh, and one more thing, Crysis, which has the highest resolution textures in a game to date, was on a regular DVD taking up about, what, 7-8 Gigs. And that game has bigger levels, bigger battles than Killzone 2 could ever ask for.

Claiming installing is awesome (maybe not awesome, but a good thing).

Metal Gear Solid 4 has an approximately 8 minute install to play the game. Ok, now, you may not have enough space, so you have to uninstall, say, Devil May Cry 4 (damn you!). As if that wasn`t bad enough, after every act you have to install… again!
Act 2: 3 mins
Act 3: 3 mins
Act 4: 2 mins
Act 5: 1 min

To me, hehe, this is a kind of slap in the face at Kojima and his “We don`t have to swap disks because this is Blu-Ray” joke. It would take less time to actually swap disks. Nice goin there, Kojima!
This is a PS3, not a PC! It`s a console, I don`t wan`t to install things. When I get a game I wan`t to play it! Not wait 10 mins for an annoying install!

After playing Metal Gear Solid 4… I can safely say that the game looks awesome graphics wise, BUT there is nothing that I have seen in the game that couldn`t be done on a 360.

Don`t try an convince me that the 20 min install time for DMC4 is a good thing when there is barely any difference between the 360 and the PS3 version. Maybe it has shorter load times, but that doesn`t help, when 360 owners probably don`t wait 20mins worth of loading time put together!

What matters more- sales of games?

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Yes this has been done 1000 times before, but now with the release of MGS 4, I wanna find out the opinion of certain cows/lems/sheep!

What is ur OPINION of MODS on SW?

Monday, November 10th, 2008

This is a SW related thread.

I don`t get how the Call of Duty franchise is so amazing.

Monday, November 10th, 2008

I`m really surprised how popular Call of Duty is.

I just don`t understand how you can play a game with no:

*characters(you don`t even know who your playing as!!

*story(oh like you haven`t heard the WWII story a million times)

*puzzles or some way of thinking

*exploration

*boss fights

*Variety in enemies

*Variety in weapons

I know you all are saying, well it`s WWII how are you going to have all those things.

WWII and that generic modern war is not meant for games!! Maybe one at best, but I don`t get how you can play Call of Duty 2 and be excited for the next ones because they`re basically the same exact thing!

Playing MGS4 was so refreshing. You KNOW who your playing as and there`s an actual story behind everything. The developers were also free to be creative and not base everything on reality.

Playing Call of Duty and games like BioShock, Medal of Honor, Halo, Killzone, Haze, Timeshift, Timesplitters, Farcry, and Crysis, seem so… bland.
