Why use review scores from others to justify the quality of YOUR experience?

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Yes I have recently ventured back into the illogical, ridiculous, never ending, hilarious, and pointless abyss known as System Wars. If you know nothing of how things work here in System Wars let me tell you about one aspect which only reinforces the stupidity of the place (yeah it`s a stupid area to go into, but it is a fun place regardless). In System Wars review scores are used to justify a game or system`s greatness. Of course using a review score to some how prove that your experience was right and other`s experiences with the game were wrong is a lame thing to do, but people do it anyways. Review scores are used here only when they benefit the person, when they don`t give them an advantage in an argument they will not use them, for example here at GS the PC has the most AA and AAA exclusive games out of any system (last time I checked). When you tell that to someone they will simply say I use this other website for review scores so it doesn`t matter. When a game that the same person who “doesn`t care” about GS scores receives a high score from GS they will claim “ownage”. So this whole thing is hypocritical to say the least. Anyways that is enough of a lesson on the way System Wars works for now, it is time to get to the meat of this whole thing.

System Wars is the darkest of dark abysses in which only the bravest and the crazies will post.

You know I love it when people try to use review scores from mainstream websites as proof that a game is great and if you didn t enjoy the game then your experience is wrong or you are just a silly old “fanboy”. For example Halo got a 9.7 here at GS, it has to be good… right? Well I m sure you could argue that the game is technically great and all of that wonderful stuff, but really it all boils down to what you think of the game and not some total stranger s view of a game. The game can be technically amazing in all kinds of aspects, but if it isn t fun than you probably aren t going to play it or at least you probably won t enjoy playing the game.

So let me say this, Halo is an average game. “OMGZ U CAN T SAY THAT IT GOT A 97 out of 100 at METACRITIC!” Yeah well that is nice, but it got a 6.7 from me. Gee, I wonder what I am going to care about more.

Oh noes! The Halo fanboys have transformed!

Now I`m going to have 50 billion crazy rabies infected Halo fanboys chomping at my neck, saying “you are wrong man… Halo is a great game look at these scores man, obviously your experience with the game is incorrect”. What I find to be entertaining might be different than what others find to be entertaining. I have said this type of thing on many occasions, but I will say it again. Games are about entertainment, if the game isn`t entertaining I`m not going to go with the flow and call it entertaining just because it got high scores from some websites and some magazines. Sorry I`m the type of person to assuage you guys. I`m here to state my opinion even if it hurts your hypersensitive bodies and feelings in ways that are currently inconceivable to man. I probably just caused the Earth`s water levels to rise to dangerous cataclysmic levels because of how much tears I`ve brought to the eyes of the fans of Halo. So let me set the record straight and give you all a nice big tissue, I like Halo as a Coopertive game, it is one of, if not the best out of the console FPS bunch so I don`t really consider Halo to be an average game (I gave it a 9.5), but others do and I can understand that. However there are some people out there that just flat out say “Halo Sucks” and don`t give any reasoning for it, that is lame if you ask me.

I m sorry for bringing up Halo, I should have known that their tears could wipe us off the planet. Hopefully it isn t too late.

Don`t give me these review scores as evidence that I`m wrong because Joe, Jan, Jane, John, Jerry Reviewers loved X game. I don`t give a ****. I`m not supporting blind hatred for games, but I do respect people who stand by their own opinions and don`t soften up to please others. So instead of flaunting fancy numbers in my face how about you give me some reasons why a game is good or bad.

Next "MGS4" quality game to be released…

Monday, November 10th, 2008

….for any system? I`m assuming RE5 will be released next year sometime so that`s a pretty long wait. The amount of work that went into MGS4 is apparent but will anything come close this year? I like action games and just finished NG2 and GTA4 before playing Metal Gear 4. I plan on getting Tomb Raider later this year and GEOW 2 for the co-op. I`m I missing any other games?

Prequels dont determine the quality for their sequels !!!

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Though quite new to SW, I`ve seen many many many topics / posts from people bashing or praising sequels backing up their OPINION only by how good or bad their prequels have done… Sometimes also basing their opinion on the devs` previous projects…

History thought us in many occasions that sequels can go either way, they might improve further upon its prequel or else the sequel can deliver less than what was expected ending up being just another `good game`… (there are occasions where the sequel just delivers the same experience with slightly better visuals)

I take Killzone2 for example (yes am a PS3 Fan)…. its being bashed because of its prequel KZ1… Yes its true that KZ1 was an average shooter but not as bad as many want us to believe… but why haters use this as a sad excuse to bash KZ2 i really dont get it… Guerilla are taking their time, they know the flaws KZ1 had and seem to be addressing those flaws… they have a larger (more experienced) team and last (not least) backed by a huge budget… Add to these the positive comments from journalists when they tried the game, and the vids shown (gameplay vids), one should already have an idea of the huge work the devs have done..

I usually never judge a game until its released and I play it…. So though I have a good feeling about KZ2, I`ll wait before stating whether it will be a great fps or an average one…

But then again we are in SW and fanboys will just hate anything which is not out on their system..

While it`s no PC mod support, Forge has some quality to it (56 no no)

Monday, November 10th, 2008

People have done some sick things with Forge, and I have been browsing around to see what`s been made.

And then there have been some noteworthy effort remakes of maps from Halo such as Foundation, Turf, Midship, and more. I honestly hope they make more maps like Foundry for Forge, because some people do some amazing stuff with this feature.

In terms of hardware quality, PS3 crashes Xbox 360

Monday, November 10th, 2008

I just got my brand new xbox 360, and in terms of build/polish quality of the hardware, it is just not on par with the ps3. And the power cable has a “brick”, and this is by its literal meaning, I mean a huge brick! Even though I`ve gotten a falcon with the quiter BenQ dvd drive, it is still noise. I cant imagine how much noiser it is with the other cd-rom drives.

PS3 feels like a luxury car while xbox 360 is like a economic sedan. I hope the games are as good as I`ve been reading on this forum. Currently playing Lost Oddysey, and while the UI is last gen, having fun so far.

Which game do you recomment next? Gears of War, Mass Effect of Halo 3?

Quality control - DS/Wii.

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Why doesn`t Nintendo go back to their old draconian selves of strict quality control? The large amount of shovelware is worrying, it would force developers to actually make good games instead of you know… spending one weekend creating Bratz Ponyz and getting some cheap cash.

Nintendo maintaining its quality control

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Nintendo is maintaining its quality control only on its own games though. Anyway, why should nintendo even bother with other companies. if they quarrel with other companies because of the shovelware, it will only scare devs away from the wii/ds even the talented and great devs. You wouldn`t want that to happen do you? LOL

Wired: Nintendo is huge now. How do you maintain quality control?

Miyamoto: I`m always instructing my game designers on the history of the characters and worlds we`ve created. Often we`re in development and I`ll say, “Oh, this looks like a Sega game. We need to make it look more like Mario.”
