Why use review scores from others to justify the quality of YOUR experience?

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Yes I have recently ventured back into the illogical, ridiculous, never ending, hilarious, and pointless abyss known as System Wars. If you know nothing of how things work here in System Wars let me tell you about one aspect which only reinforces the stupidity of the place (yeah it`s a stupid area to go into, but it is a fun place regardless). In System Wars review scores are used to justify a game or system`s greatness. Of course using a review score to some how prove that your experience was right and other`s experiences with the game were wrong is a lame thing to do, but people do it anyways. Review scores are used here only when they benefit the person, when they don`t give them an advantage in an argument they will not use them, for example here at GS the PC has the most AA and AAA exclusive games out of any system (last time I checked). When you tell that to someone they will simply say I use this other website for review scores so it doesn`t matter. When a game that the same person who “doesn`t care” about GS scores receives a high score from GS they will claim “ownage”. So this whole thing is hypocritical to say the least. Anyways that is enough of a lesson on the way System Wars works for now, it is time to get to the meat of this whole thing.

System Wars is the darkest of dark abysses in which only the bravest and the crazies will post.

You know I love it when people try to use review scores from mainstream websites as proof that a game is great and if you didn t enjoy the game then your experience is wrong or you are just a silly old “fanboy”. For example Halo got a 9.7 here at GS, it has to be good… right? Well I m sure you could argue that the game is technically great and all of that wonderful stuff, but really it all boils down to what you think of the game and not some total stranger s view of a game. The game can be technically amazing in all kinds of aspects, but if it isn t fun than you probably aren t going to play it or at least you probably won t enjoy playing the game.

So let me say this, Halo is an average game. “OMGZ U CAN T SAY THAT IT GOT A 97 out of 100 at METACRITIC!” Yeah well that is nice, but it got a 6.7 from me. Gee, I wonder what I am going to care about more.

Oh noes! The Halo fanboys have transformed!

Now I`m going to have 50 billion crazy rabies infected Halo fanboys chomping at my neck, saying “you are wrong man… Halo is a great game look at these scores man, obviously your experience with the game is incorrect”. What I find to be entertaining might be different than what others find to be entertaining. I have said this type of thing on many occasions, but I will say it again. Games are about entertainment, if the game isn`t entertaining I`m not going to go with the flow and call it entertaining just because it got high scores from some websites and some magazines. Sorry I`m the type of person to assuage you guys. I`m here to state my opinion even if it hurts your hypersensitive bodies and feelings in ways that are currently inconceivable to man. I probably just caused the Earth`s water levels to rise to dangerous cataclysmic levels because of how much tears I`ve brought to the eyes of the fans of Halo. So let me set the record straight and give you all a nice big tissue, I like Halo as a Coopertive game, it is one of, if not the best out of the console FPS bunch so I don`t really consider Halo to be an average game (I gave it a 9.5), but others do and I can understand that. However there are some people out there that just flat out say “Halo Sucks” and don`t give any reasoning for it, that is lame if you ask me.

I m sorry for bringing up Halo, I should have known that their tears could wipe us off the planet. Hopefully it isn t too late.

Don`t give me these review scores as evidence that I`m wrong because Joe, Jan, Jane, John, Jerry Reviewers loved X game. I don`t give a ****. I`m not supporting blind hatred for games, but I do respect people who stand by their own opinions and don`t soften up to please others. So instead of flaunting fancy numbers in my face how about you give me some reasons why a game is good or bad.

Gamespot becoming IGN? Two 10.0s? We should use Game Rankings.

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Give me a break? 2 10.0 games? AAA is becoming meaningless if GS is lax enough now to hand out 10.0s like candy.

If GS is becoming like IGN now, we should just use Game Rankings for AA/AAA status.

Why do people use A`s when there are numbers to rate a game?

Monday, November 10th, 2008

I was just wondering. At first it actually lost me, I didn`t really know what people were referring to when they wrote about AA or AAA games, although it was obvious it was some sort of ranking.

Anyway, I just wanted to know.

Do we use Gamerankings/Metacritic? Your Opinion, here, NOW!

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Good evening all…

Just a quick query about the taboos of S.W. Are we still using the “only gamespot matters“ mentality or have we adopted the broader range of reveiws at say Gamerankings and Metacritic? I ask this because Ive been seeing alot of differnet, conflicting opinons on the matter (Gamespot isnt credable, Gamerankings dont count, only Gamespot matters, to bad its better on Gamerankings etc.)

In my opinion we should be using every rescource availble to give each and every game a fair reveiw system, I think that Sytem Wars should count a games worth through a wider varity of professional opinions instead of just one, both to be fairer on the game and its audeince, heaven knows this is the most popular “video game debate forum“ On the web, so this seems like a pretty good move to me.

So Im interested in your opinion, what do you think??

thanks for reading.

Edit: My bad, I didnt mean to downplay Metacritc in anyway, Just got my websites mixed up is all, it happens to the best of us.

How much do you use your mic?

Monday, November 10th, 2008

A lot of people say a plus of a system is the stuff you get with it and one argument is the mic you get. How many times have you honestly used your mic and it was actually usefull(Not just yelling “ZOMG YOU GUYS SUCK CAP LOCKS!!!”). I find myself saying about 5 times and all of those times were private group with friends. Personally I like typing messages to people on the pc. So do you think the standard mic is awesome selling point or a nice to have?

Thanks

EDIT-On a side note this does have to do with sw, it is a common argument used.

Why Should We Use Review Scores? (Read First)

Monday, November 10th, 2008

First of all, I`m not objecting to the use of reviews, on the contrarily I love reviews but I do have an issue with the use scores. My main gripe with them is that their not factual, it`s an opinion, just a numerical representation of how much the reviewer like said game. On the other hand the actual text has actual evidence, for example the buggy camera in NG II, or the frame rate problems in Mass Effect, those are real issues that can be addressed and refuted with evidence.

The only time I have seen people quote a review is when it comes out and then after awhile people forget and start throw out these meaningless numbers that don`t really add to the discussion. I want point out that I don`t mean everybody, there are still some that may use the actual review to refute some of the more ridiculous claims I have seen here at SW, but that number seems to be declining more and more

To illustrate my point further lets see one of the most controversial reviews on GS; Ratchet and Clank FToD on the PS3.

Ratchet and Clank: Future Tools of Destruction Review

First of all I have no idea what and identity crisis is, I never heard that term used while describing video games and probably never hear it again. Asides from that you can see from the review that RaC: FToD has amazing graphics, stellar gameplay and a vast array of fun weapons to use. On the negative side it does have a too many unused gameplay mechanics and a non-existent story line.

Seems reasonable, you could argue that the excessive gameplay mechanics doesn`t really hinder the game, and a story isn`t really necessary for a plataformer, just look at Super Mario.

Of course most people and by people I mean fanboys, don`t do that when they talk about this game. What they do is just scream is “Ratchet and Clank 7.5 is teh suxxorz ” while completely avoiding the review, which was actually pretty positive.

So my question is this, why should we use the score to show how good a game if the review is a much better way of proving or disproving it.

I would also like to add that this has nothing to do with Ratchet and Clank, I just used that game to illustrate my point on how people just use the score rather than the actual review to dole out criticism about video games.

Decision time: Only use Gamespot or switch to gamerankings?

Monday, November 10th, 2008

MGS4, fantastic game witch got a 10/10 here, but it is currently averaging around a 92-93% on GR. Wicth one should we use? Should we stick to only gamespot like we have been doing or use combined averages on GR?
